Make Time Work For You |
Shalom,
In a homeschool, the schedule is extremely important. I a lot of ways a homeschool is like any other education system or business, to ensure success there are schedules. Of course in homeschool, the type of schedule and how strict or lax it is is totally up to you. This is how we are scheduling our day to day and our year.
In our homeschool, we have a borderline strict schedule that allows flow. Our typical homeschool hours are from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. We used to have a schedule that allowed us to be done in 4-5 hours but we spent considerable time on homework or playing catch up. So adding a couple extra hours to our class time has made our day less stressful.
Our year is scheduled in a six-week on 1 week off format that allows for short breaks so that we can recuperate and relax. We started our year on Aug. 22, 2016, and will end June 23, 2017. Our first break is coming up and we are looking forward to it.
Our week is scheduled a four-day format. Fridays are off days or field trip days. There are two main reasons # 1 when my children become adults they will go to college and most courses are two days a week and unless you schedule all your courses in one day you will generally only attend classes 4 days per week. Reason # 2 We use that extra day for any one on one teacher/student time needed and prepping forShabbat. Shabbat prep takes a considerable amount of time with meals, cleaning, and laundry, and shopping, etc. When daylight savings time hit we will primarily Shabbat prep on Fridays.
The littles complete their homeschooling in abt an hour in the afternoon.
For the older students, our days are scheduled as follows:
8:00 am Torah/Hebrew
8:40 am Speech
9:10 am Math
10:05 am Literature
11:00 am History/Geography
11:50 lunch
12:30 Health/Science
1:25 Art
*There are 10 min breaks between each course so that we can wrap up and prepare for the next lesson. As with all things we do run over or get started late sometimes so we adjust accordingly. We may add more time or do less work.
With so many students I find myself adjusting our day to day often but for the most part, we try to stick with our set schedule. It keeps everyone on track and mama sane. This year I am proud that I am owning the time and not letting it rule me. Homeschooling is a beautiful thing and it allows us to do things on our schedule!
Many Blessings,
T. Henderson
